Pathology

Pathology is a branch of diagnostic medicine that focus on studies of fluids, tissues, or organs taken from the body, thereby diagnose illness. It is the study of the origin, nature, and course of a disease.

There are multiple types of pathology:

  • Anatomical pathology: A medical specialty that involves the examination of organs and tissues to diagnose disease.
  • Surgical pathology: Surgical pathology is the study of tissue samples removed during surgery or other invasive procedures to help diagnose disease, develop treatment plans, and provide information about prognosis
  • Clinical pathology is a medical specialty that is concerned with the diagnosis of disease based on the laboratory analysis of bodily fluids such as blood and urine, as well as tissues, using the tools of chemistry, clinical microbiology, haematology and molecular pathology.
  • Hematopathology is the study of diseases of blood cells, including constituents such as white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets and the tissues, and organs which comprise the hematopoietic system.
  • Molecular pathology is focused upon the study and diagnosis of disease through the examination of molecules within organs, tissues or bodily fluids.
  • Biopsy: Pathologists also work with a surgically removed sample of diseased tissue, called a biopsy.
  • Autopsy is the pathological examination of an entire body after death is called an autopsy.
